HIPAA and JCAHO Information
Security for Medical Equipment
Emanuel Furst, Colleagues
A compromise in information security for medical equipment can have serious
effects on patient care. Contaminated/altered or delayed data may even be life
threatening. A serious breach will almost certainly be widely reported in
regional, if not national media. Both the HIPAA Security Rules and JCAHO
standards establish minimum expectations for assuring the confidentiality,
integrity and availability of electronic data. This workshop
discusses the issues, recent publications and the processes required to reduce
risk and achieve regulatory compliance.

JCAHO Environment of Care
C. Roger Camplin
Workshops include JCAHO Standards Update, Patient Safety Performance Measures
for the Environment of Care ® , and Measuring-Monitoring-Managing the EC. The
Environment of Care ® is a trademark of the Joint Commission on Accreditation
of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO). Improvement Technologies, LLC is not
affiliated with the JCAHO.

Medical Equipment
Accident/Incident Investigation
Colleagues
Fortunately, adverse events involving medical devices are rare. Unfortunately,
prompt, careful, and objective investigation is required to determine the
scientific and operational explanations of what happened. This seminar
addresses policies, processes and techniques for managing the response to an
event, from notification to sequestering the device, arranging for or
conducting the investigation, and what to expect if litigation follows.
Discussion of appropriate policies and procedures, and managing communication
with maintainers and manufacturers can help avoid common problems.

Outsourcing/Insourcing Clinical
Engineering
Emanuel Furst
How to develop a win-win solution, making the best choices. Choosing what is
best for the organization, for its patients, clinical staff, and clinical
engineering staff. We identify and develop a process to prioritize the many
issues we should consider when making the decisions required to achieve the
best possible outcome. Using these top priorities, we discuss how to decide
among the specific providers whether changing or staying on the current course.
This presentation does not take sides, but reveals many of the issues to
consider, discuss and negotiate before changing. Many of these issues can also
stimulate improvement without changing providers.

Performance Measures and
Performance Improvement in Clinical and/or Facilities Engineering
Emanuel Furst, Colleagues
Using Clinical Engineering Improvement Tools™ or Facilities Engineering Improvement Tools™ as a workbook along with other material, we select several priority dimensions of performance. We discuss the importance and implications of these measures, the need for standard definitions and standard ways to record the data. Using hypothetical numerical values we discuss ways we can improve performance, identify peers who have succeeded in developing best practices and the possibility of benchmarking with selected peers. Topics are selected in consultation with the participants and, for example, may include productivity, financial performance, accreditation compliance, competency assessment, contract management, identifying and prioritizing training.
